Batten down the hatches!

The big "atmospheric river" hit us last night.  There's a bit of a reprieve right now, although it is really WINDY!  I expect the rain will start up again soon.  Minimal puddling in the pathways, but so far so good.

#AGAVE WATCH.  Some not so great looking leaves, they aren't mush.  The core is nice and firm. Hmm, I dug a nice trench so the rain will run off to the path (hopefully).
I haven't posted much as I've been in the middle of dumping, donating and getting ready for the new carpeting.  It is all done and now we've started the process of putting everything back.   We went to breakfast to stay out of their way. Livermore Denica's, I made a stupid mistake and ate breakfast with my coffee when I woke up.  All I could manage was a salad.   Olivia had the California benedict (with avocado instead of ham).  And Vincent had "This and That" bacon, pancakes & eggs. They also have freshly made tortilla chips &  salsa at a self serve station.   I need to go back and have a proper breakfast next time.  Their chilaquiles are fantastic!
Heres a "before" of our front room, all stripped of items per the instructions. *Yes there is a hole in the drywall, lol.  Our outside spigot on the side of the house broke off - the emergency plumber said it will be faster and cheaper to go from the inside than cut the siding. It is fixed now, but a drywall repair is in order!
And the beginning of putting the room back together.  Oh look, you can barely see the hole!  I realize beige carpet isn't the most exciting thing in the world, but the old carpet was very worn and dark.  When they took the old rolls of carpet out, it looked like there had been several murders in the house. 15 years of living-family of 5 will do that.  Stains, not murder.
It does feel cleaner.  I wanted all wood floors put in - but GULP, lots of dollars.
From Tuesday, my heart lifted when I noticed the sun hitting the top of the barrels.  In deep winter the sun is too low to shine on them at all.  Yay! Soon they'll be in full bake position.
Not today it won't.  The rain is back!
A friend of mine just texted some photos from Portland, with gusting cold wind, ice & snow!  Brrrr.  How's it going out there for you?

  1. Glad your river is done for now. We’ve just had more snow than usual but not as much as predicted.

  2. Congratulations on the new carpet! The back slope looks great too.

It's pouring here at the moment. We've had 1.35 inches of rain since Wednesday so far with more expected into tomorrow. I'm concerned for the people in the burn areas...

    1. Thank you Kris, I've been wondering how your area was doing. I did see some scary mud slide videos.

  4. The rain left you and headed for us. Mudslides in Pacific Palisades. The burn areas. Sigh. We knew it was coming, but still, what a mess.

  5. Yay for new clean carpet! Fingers crossed for the agave, and ya, you know what it's like here. Thankfully the frigid east wind has stopped raging and we woke up to more snow, but less ice than predicted. It can melt now (and is supposed to start this afternoon).

    1. The snow looked gorgeous from photos I saw, but I'm even happier it's shortlived and will be melting today. And the damn wind is gone, the worst!

  6. Ha ha! Pre-breakfast breakfast. Just call the second one 'brunch'... it should feel less silly :-D

A fresh new carpet looks and feels amazing. I love the long, mid-century style bench on the far left in the "before" photo.
That color of the Anemone is to die for... sigh.
I'd be heading to the garden shortly after a couple of weeks' absence. The little bit of snow we had last night melted and the rains aren't here quite yet. Happy Valentine's Day!

    1. Ha ha, yes brunch is it. I was mad at myself for wasting the chance. I rarely have breakfast or brunch out. That bench is still there, I adore the style unfortunately our house doesn't match. I can't resist some pieces though. The Anemone surprised me, I forgot about planting it there, it is so blue. I'm glad you get a chance to get out to the garden :). Happy Valentine's Day!

  7. That photo of your Agave ovatifolia made my heart sink. I've lost three to rot now, over the course of the last 5 years. Pour some hydrogen peroxide in the center. My friend Nick recommended that when I had rot in the center of my Aloe helenae, and it worked.

    1. And it was perfection 30 days ago. I'm going out to apply hydrogen peroxide now - the middle is still nice and firm, but it's not like I can cut the outer leaves. I don't want to pineapple it. *I have a frosty blue waiting in the wings if I have to.- I'll just make sure to lift & amend the bed before I do.
