Cont'd Acquisitions
Good Morning! I thought I'd post my plant haul as stated in the last post. I typically forget such promises. First up, Dry Oasis Plants in Half Moon Bay. He ships, fast & well. But with the new area I've got to play with, I couldn't resist making the hour+ trip to nab some larger specimens.
Aloes in order form order---thraskii, vaombe (open cross), salm-dyckiana, pretoriensis (open cross), labworana, carpenteria gem & bussei
Aloe tongaensis 'Medusa' 7g. from San Marcos. Medium tree aloe to about 10' with orange blooms. The leaves stress a little orangey which I 💚.
Aloe ferox-something. I like the stacking leaves, and the upright growth makes me think it was crossed with another tree aloe? Time will tell.
Variegated stuff is not my usual deal, nor is aloe arborescens. But I have a spot in front of the black fence and behind columnar cactus so I made an exception. This var. Aloe arborescens may fit the bill. Also, I shouldn't be so judgey or frumpy I can't change my mind and give things a chance.
Last but not least, Aloe barbarae. A classic and I can't believe I don't have one. Can grow to 30' which makes me giggle.
On to my trip to San Diego, not a ton of things. From Solana Succulents. I SHOULD HAVE DUG AROUND MORE! Ferocactus pringlei, mammillaria plumosa & cereus forbesii, spiral. The spiral is a super chonky variety.Agave stricta x3, agave celsii multicolor, ferocactus horridus.
Right: aloe nobilis, aloe allosaurus, echeveria 'cream puff'
Right: aloe nobilis, aloe allosaurus, echeveria 'cream puff'
Left: aloe dorotheae 'forever sunset', aloe 'Crosbys prolific', kalanchoe longiflora 'inferno'
Some goof balls.
Yucca filifera. To the right a peek of Cleistocactus hylacanthus 'rocket torch' - promises blooms for most of the year. *Cleisto is from Waterwise.
Oreocereus celsianus, 'Old Man of the Andes'. I have a few of these, but I needed a co-pilot. He immediately stuck a thorn into the dash, like putting out a cigarette.
Just the attitude I needed for that horrendous drive home.
From Waterwise BotanicalsHechtia with no label, considerably more silver than my argentea with zero burgundy and strappier leaves? I'm hoping someone knows, and I bet it will be Gerhard or David.
This is my favorite purchase of the trip. It's stunning.
The good news is I stayed under budget for the whole shebang. And have put a dent in acquiring plants for the new space.
And because I was so high on silver, I nabbed a Cotyledon 'passionheart' and a mangave with no label.

In Dirtbag Garden news, I'm making friends by giving away loads of zuchinni & japanese eggplant almost daily. And enjoying picking veg for dinner with no worry of parasites.
The sunflowers are a bonus.
This almost white cream colored one is a new favorite, with myself & the bees.
I love the teddy bear... I grew some a few years ago. No sunflowers for me this year.
ReplyDeleteSo I am enjoying yours.
The 2" ers for $3.00 .... score! :-)
Yes, I probably should've gotten another tray at that price. The teddy bear is cute, I've not had luck with them in the past.
DeleteGardening is so different there.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing the differences - re: climate.
DeleteI mean, you do have all that new land to plant, so... And you stayed under budget? What sort of crazy budget did you have?
ReplyDeleteA sensible budget sadly. I'm a cheapskate at heart.
DeleteOMG, what a haul!
ReplyDeleteAloe barbarae... can grow to 30'... Wowza! I hope your giggles were of joy not trepidations of its enormous eventual size. You do have room of it now. I love how you think of variegation against the black fence. The silvery plants are gorgeous. Cool bumps on Aloe ferox-something.
Yay to the 2" babies: the pocket-planting in your meteors are waiting!
I was quite pleased with my traditional yellow, giant sunflower until I saw your cream colored one. I must have that one next year!
Chavli
Yes, giggling for joy. I love a robust grower (if it doesn't spread itself around). The pocket planting is exactly what I was thinking, you read my mind. I should save seeds from those white ones, they are spectacular. Let me know if you want some - I'd be happy to send some to you!
DeleteI'd love some, that's so generous of you... imaging growing my own tz-flower!
Deleteimagine my seeds growing in Chavli's garden! my email is: (tracy.rinella@gmail.com)* they won't be dry for a few months, but will send when they are!
DeleteWell that's a darn fine haul! I wish I could grow aloes in the garden, that would open up a whole new level of design possibilities. The teddy bear sunflowers are my fav for a vase arrangement.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the prompt, I'll cut some today!
Deletep.s.... I heard San Marcos is giving away the rest of their inventory... too bad you didn't know that when driving home!
ReplyDeleteAre you kidding me? That would've got me out of that dang traffic jam, too.
DeleteSuch a variety of things. Can't wait to see where they'll go. You have some stunning specimens that will have an immediate impact.
ReplyDeleteMystery hechtia from Waterwise Botanicals: I have no idea, and neither does WWB according to this FB post: https://www.facebook.com/waterwisebotanicals/posts/pfbid0UypB34pTSvvb1yrQqQ65V6npdWF4jK21bCRo2bdKAM8RTXE3Z9DsuWTHo8edqMWzl
Well, that's still an answer of sorts! I did ask around when I was there, no one knew. I can't believe you found that from 2022. I'm excited to get planting, but am making myself wait until it cools a bit.
DeleteWas für eine Pflanzenmenge. Aloen gefallen mir besonders gut.
DeleteThat is an incredible haul. How did you fit all the San Diego purchases in one trip? Were you driving a truck?! At least that miserable drive home was worth it.
ReplyDeleteI love the sunflowers.
Kris, I wish I had been in a truck. I have a mid-size SUV and no one with me, so it is quite roomy with all the seats pushed flat. I could have fit more really, and snugly fit is always better. But, I did manage to get home with no tragedies. *All those aloes were from a trip just prior. The sunflowers make me smile, the goldfinches are having a heyday eating the leaves.
DeleteWhat a wealth of beauty! The swirly succulent, whose name I couldn't retain, is most excellent.
