Day Out

I'm doing a little hunting & gathering for the front re-do spring planting, that called for a trip to Berkeley.  First stop, American Soil & Stone where I promptly tore my favorite work sweatshirt.  Appropriate.

Thankfully, it was a gorgeous day and I didn't need the extra cover for long! We are in a stretch of t-shirt weather.  I wanted this little boulder baaaaaad.  Too hard to reach down inside and get it out, why I usually trick Ivan in to going with me 😉.

A stop at Berkeley Horticultural Nursery.  This clump of Phlebodium aureum, rabbit's foot fern was beautiful in the dappled sun.
Though the rabbit's foot part wasn't really showing.
And of all the -absolutely not looking for that plant, I bought this? Rhododendron lysolepis, a dwarf Rhododendron. I'm so confused by this, maybe I'll pot it and try Bonsai?  The tiny leaves got to me.
Moving on, Flowerland!
Weed It and Reap!
My photo doesn't do this Cannomois grandis justice, it was really pretty.
Score! Berzelia Albiflora, I have one in the back garden and adore it.  I never want to cut into for arrangements, but with 2 of them I'll be more willing.  I haven't seen one for sale and have been looking.

This good sized 7g Aloe Polyphylla was $234.95! Oh MAMA! That's a lot. Plus they're sulky.
Most of the smaller succulents are reasonably priced.  Nice display!
Over to the 4" pots, picked up a Cotula hispida.
Overhead a pretty passionflower was blooming.
Gnarly.
On my way to checkout, this Vireya George Budgen 'Sunshine' got my attention with it's over the top cheerfulness.  I like Vireya but worry Livermore is too harsh, plus this one was INSIDE.
As did this unusual ant plant, Myrmecodia platytyrea.
I really enjoy stopping here, even if my wallet is empty.
Araucaria down!
Swanky!
Small plant haul: Berzelia albiflora, Dasylirion quadrangulatum,  Casuarina glauca 'Cousin It' & Aloe (distans, I believe not labeled). Not pictured, Cotula hispida.
And a few rocks.

Tomorrow, I'm off to the dump.  Getting rid of some garage & outdoor junk.  💚

    1. Flowerland is so well done, not a huge space but the inventory and selection are great!

Weed it and Reap is great.

  4. I wish I could have joined you on that day out! You got a nice haul. I've tried a Vireya outdoors here and it last less than a year :(

    1. Oh, I wish you could've joined - how fun would that be! I think I buy more when someone is there to encourage me. Good to know on the Vireya, Ann Nichols has a couple in her front garden that are thriving. I think they prefer that temperate climate of Berkeley, who doesn't?

  5. The sloppy bitch sweatshirt makes me laugh. I've wanted to use that word more often in my own blog, but shied away from using it until recently, not sure how it would be received. Per usual, I think I overthought it. Are you going to patch it up with something cool and punk, or leave it ripped as a statement piece? You've got a lot of swanky nurseries down there, ooh la la indeed.

    1. Oh, I woke up in the middle of the night questioning my use of dirty language. I reminded myself how petite and classy the embroidery work was - ha ha ha! Honestly, I hope I didn't offend anyone. I'm thinking I should make the repair look like stitches? The nurseries in Berkeley are top notch, it's probably a good thing they aren't closer.

  6. $234.95! for a plant! Wow. I think Mr. Piglet would have a conniption if I dare to pay that amount. I note you also past over the opportunity. Love your selection of rocks.
I love your sloppy bitch sweatshiret. Hopefully you can darn it ... it would add character to the top.
Your post reminds me I really must dodge the raindrops and have some plant buying therapy

    1. I agree with Mr. Piglet on this one, that price is ridiculous. I found a much smaller one a few months back for a reasonable amount, around $30 -which is still a lot! I will definitely repair that sweatshirt :). Yes, enjoy some shopping!

  8. That boulder! I'd want a dozen of them :-)

Always good to see Berkeley area nurseries featured.

  9. A fun adventure.
    I love the rocks.
Did I tell you that all my rocks I have hauled from my parents farm? They live about 2 hours from me. During the years of building our gardens, we would bring a load of rock home with us. ;-)
I am going to be re doing the front garden in the spring, so I will have photos for you.

I'm sorry to hear about your favorite shirt, but the picture did make me laugh! LOL

  11. Oh, those succulents with boulders along the curb--nice! And all those rocks--I'm jealous! (Of course one must tear one's favorite sweatshirt, but gosh darn it!)

  12. Haha, love the sweatshirt. I've only visited Flowerland once but my enjoyment of the beautiful space was tempered by the fact a rowdy group of children were running all over the place while their parents enjoyed coffee and ignored them. Score on the Berzelia Albiflora!
