Atmospheric river
We did receive some much needed rain, just under 1". Less than what was predicted, but thrilling nonetheless. I woke up to some crazy orange skies on the 22nd, rain started about 10 a.m.
Most importantly, it was my sweet son's birthday 😀. Happy Birthday Vincent!
He requested vanilla cupcakes, I couldn't resist making chocolate as well. Ivan and Sophia joined us to celebrate, Ivan bringing some fun plants over. *I never know what he's got up his sleeve, but it's
Helichrysum retortum, a South African strawflower -I have one of these and it handled the hot dry summer like a champ. Fine silvery foliage and stayed tight & tidy. Blooms are small and daisy like.
Artemisia versicolor 'Sea Foam' -Soft & frothy.
And a dry greenhouse group, we left them out for one day of rain. His planting mix is incredibly fast draining, so a good soaking is fine.
Also, a fun order from Waltzing Matilija arrived (IN ONE DAY, I couldn't believe it - ordered it and it was on my porch the next afternoon). Acacia glaucoptera, Acacia merinthophora, Leucadendron winter red, Eucalyptus pleurocarpa,
Banksia nivea, ooh this is so pretty. Reminds me of the snip snip of pinking shears.Banksia petiolaris, look at that cute new leaf.
I have a stupid head cold, I'm sure from traveling. But did spend some time outside picking up leaves.
Of course, there are a few more weeks of leaves dropping to look forward to 😖.
The rain drops on the Cleistocactus strausii, silver torch were so pretty. I couldn't capture the crystal droplets in the sun. I'll try again.
Looks more like soggy wet hair, hahaha.
I hope everyone has a fantastic and relaxing Thanksgiving Holiday! Hopefully my next post will be a triumphant return to the building of the lath house.
My eye was immediately drawn to that Banksia nivea. So envious that you can grow that outdoors! And that sky, very vibrant and stunning! I should be doing something more productive than reading through blogs online, but today I am feeling super gueva (lazy) after cleaning the house and preparing food for game night yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI'm sitting here reading, too! I'm going to head out into the sun for a while, more weeding. Cleaning & cooking does wear me out, game night sounds fun. :)
DeleteWe got about 3 3/4" of rain. Seems like a lot, but when I dug a hole a little while ago, only the top 1" was wet, dry underneath. Crazy!
ReplyDeleteYou got a bunch of cool plants!! Troy is the best. I got an Acacia merinthophora a few months ago and look forward to it growing up.
I hope you'll shake your head cold quickly!
Wow, you got quite a bit more - that's great! You know, I'm glad you mentioned how deep the rain penetrated. It's always less than I think - I'll do a test here and see how far the rain soaked in to the ground. Troy is the best, and you're the best for introducing him to all of us! I'm making myself some soup for dinner, that should help :)
DeleteThat's quite the collection of plants. That last one totally looks like something I could crochet, with changing colors and all. Wow.
ReplyDeleteOh I love that idea, a crocheted banksia! That's so cool, I love your string of christmas lights.
DeleteThat's a spectacular sunrise and a GREAT plant haul! I was never able to make Phylica pubescens happy here so you're ahead of the gave in my view. Your got more rain than we did - my total was 0.08/inch.
ReplyDeleteI did baby them, so we will see how they do next summer with neglect? Dang, well now I'm hearing of a storm coming in more south than us, maybe that will get down there?
DeleteBeautiful photos. Plant heaven. Happy Birthday to your son. We just celebrated my husband's.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your husband! It was nice that there was some days between the birthday and Thanksgiving. Some years it is the same day, but I guess that's not so bad - you're guaranteed to have family around!
DeleteThe sky and cupcakes look awesome, but I am surprised that you would have room for another plant. 😎
ReplyDeleteHa ha ha, I'm surprised too!
DeleteFun, new plants! I love the Banksia nivea--nifty growth pattern and shape. And cupcakes, too! I'm glad you got some rain, and that first photo is incredible. Happy birthday to Vincent!
ReplyDeleteThank you Beth! The Banksia surprised me, how much I like it in person.
DeleteBeautiful collection of flowers.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to your Vincent. :-) And Happy Thanksgiving!!
ReplyDeleteCarla
Thank you Carla :)
DeleteJealous of your "Sea Foam" Artimesia. I have been looking for some for a couple years now.
ReplyDeleteI'll ask him where he got it. I'd be happy to root a cutting for you?
DeleteSo nice to get to know the genus Banksia through your blog. I had only read about it before.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I overlooked Banksia and really love them now!
DeleteFabulous new plant haul! Happy Thanksgiving to you Tracy!
ReplyDeleteHappy Thanksgiving Loree!
Delete-delightful photos of stunning specimens. The rain did my garden some good, too. I hadn't realized, but some of the natives were in need of more water, so they are looking much better after the deluge from last week.
ReplyDeleteOh good, Bea. We needed it badly, everything looks so refreshed after.
