Here & there
I'm back from a weekend in San Diego, we celebrated my daughter Olivia's birthday! The whole family together. It was a whirlwind and I'll admit to being tired this morning, we got home after 11pm. Worth it, such a blast! Dinner @ Cloak+Petal, Japanese fusion. It was delicious and the service very attentive. Olivia,Sophia,Ivan,Vincent.
Cloak+Petal was located in little Italy in downtown San Diego. Originally an Italian and Portuguese fishing neighborhood. After dinner we took a walk down to the port of San Diego to check it out.Unbeknownst to us, the Mexican Navy ship Cuauhtémoc was docked for free tours. The line was incredibly long, I imagine at least an hour wait. We just walked the dock.
A salute photo for my Dad, who served in the Navy in 1960-62. I've been the shortest in the family for a while, but I'm still shocked when I see proof of that. It was fun to walk around at night, something I only seem to do on vacation?
Saturday morning, we went to the San Diego zoo. We had been years ago, the kids too young to remember that visit.
IT WAS HOT, at least 100°.
I didn't take many photos, but I'll show a few. Gorgeous snow leopard, waiting for breakfast. We got lucky several times to see the animals being lively, which was surprising in the heat. They had just fed the large cats a rabbit each.
This is one of the Giant Pandas -Xin Bao, her name means precious treasure of prosperity and abundance.
The flamingos make for a charming photo, all the curves.
What a terrible way to sleep, only one flamingo chose to lie down on the ground.
The koala bears were all sleeping through the hottest portion of the afternoon.
Tapir, an unusal guy. Looks like a pig, but is actually related to horses and rhinoceroses.
There were lots of insects, too -behind glass.
This tarantula had just shed it's skin, you can see it's former old suit there in front.
I have to include one photo of plants, come on.
Pachypodium lamarei with a big group of Alluaudia procera behind.
And while we were waiting for the Uber, Ivan and I were admiring this Bismarck palm.
The next morning the La Jolla tide pools.
We didn't quite make either low tide, inconveniently at 2am & 2 pm.
It was great to be by the water for the light breeze and dipping our toes
A sandpiper fishing in the pools.
James left in the afternoon, he had work early the following day. The rest of us enjoyed some shopping, and an early dinner. I enjoyed every second-- Happy Birthday Olivia 💕!
It was (and will be this week) 100° here in Livermore as well. I'm not looking forward to getting back to attacking bermuda grass. Next week I'm going for my annual trip with Tina to Cabo San Lucas.
I've got a week to deal with a critter problem. The squirrels are up to NO GOOD. In the shade house, they confiscated every bit of Tillandsia usneoides, spanish moss that was draped beautifully all around the other air plants. You can see all the Tillandsia they ripped off my cork branches (I piled them into the chair). They also unpotted various rhipsalis and chewed them to bits. Including my favorite that easily draped 4' over the edge of a hanging pot. RAT BASTARDS!
And straight up STOLE the staghorn fern Ivan recently mounted on a wood plank. I left them a note. AND ordered 2 live traps. They gots to go.
As I was photographing the destruction, a squirrel ran by with a big mouthful of stuffing from our outdoor furniture. I'd like to see this nest made of MY ferns, tillandsia, rhipsalis and portions of our couch.
The Taj Mahal of squirrel nests.
Happy October!
What a bummer re the squirrels. Such destructive and cheeky little critters. Reminds me of the Carling Black Label ad. They are devious

it will make you laugh and cry when you realise what a challnge you face :(
From the photos it looks like you had a wonderful time with family.
Ha ha, yes they are devious! We did have a fabulous weekend. :)
DeleteOh yes, I'm melting in this heat. I've been whining to the kiddos about it. They just give me that teenage stare. Glad you had a good trip to San Diego. I love it down there. Sorry about the squirrels. We have a squirrel problem here. They climb the pine trees and eat the pinecones, dropping them all over the place. It's a mess.
ReplyDeleteI feel like this particular group of squirrels are bold. Normally, I have nothing against squirrels. OH, IT IS TOO HOT.
DeleteI am struck by two things: the squirrels meanness, and you walked a zoo at 110F.
ReplyDeleteWe were drinking so much water, crazy. The zoo does a good job of shading big portions so you get breaks from full sun. Still, we were drenched. It wasn't crowded at least.
DeleteTerrific togetherness outing.
ReplyDeleteTarantulas always remind me of hands, very threatening hands.
I can't look at the hissing cockroaches without wanting to climb out of my skin, but tarantulas I don't mind?
DeleteThe highs and the lows! Fun times in San Diego, I can't believe you only shared one plant photo from the zoo, that place is almost a botanical garden! As for the squirrels... damn! I'm sorry, what bastards. There must be some crazy squirrel insanity happening right now as mine have been rather destructive as well (and so bold, like they think they're my buddy sitting down for a snack next to me while I work).
ReplyDeleteThe zoo did have some amazing plants, I think I was a bit zapped from the heat. I don't know what is going on with the damn squirrels? They are not intimidated in the least. Hmmm.
DeleteThat was a fun post, even though it featured the results of squirrel rampages. I'm not sure I've ever seen that level of destruction on their part here but then maybe the coyotes have kept them in line better more than I've given them credit for. Your warning notice to the squirrels is hilarious! Great outtakes from the SD Zoo too. It's been a LONG time since I've visited there.
ReplyDeleteHa ha, the squirrels have always been here - the last few years they've gotten an attitude. I'm not usually a zoo girl, but the San Diego zoo is an exception.
DeleteSuch a wonderful outing and the animal pictures are amazing, especially the Giant Pandas, Snow Leopard and Pink Flamingos! Squirrels can cause havoc...so sorry what they did to your plants and furniture...argh! Your warning notice is too funny!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you Lee, it is a great zoo! I have the live traps, now I need to work up the courage to put them out.
DeleteHappy Birthday to Olivia! of all the pictures, that one of the Mexican Navy ship was my favorite!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jeff! The ship is pretty amazing.
DeleteWhat a wonderful weekend with your family and such a lovely way to celebrate Olivia’s birthday. San Diego seems to have given you a little of everything: good food, an evening walk by the harbour, the zoo and finally some welcome sea breeze at La Jolla. I especially like the photo of all of you together. Happy belated birthday to Olivia!
ReplyDeleteI had to laugh at your squirrel story, although I am sure I would not have found it nearly as funny if it had been my plants and garden furniture. I am always delighted when a squirrel visits my garden, and so far they have never damaged anything. After reading your post, I realize I may simply have exceptionally well-behaved squirrels!
Stealing an entire mounted staghorn fern is quite an achievement. And then running past you with a mouthful of stuffing from the furniture almost sounds like deliberate provocation. Your description of the “Taj Mahal of squirrel nests” made me laugh. With ferns, Tillandsia, Rhipsalis and comfortable upholstery, they are certainly aiming for luxury accommodation!
I hope your traps solve the problem and that your remaining plants survive their ambitious building project.
Warm greetings from Germany,
Oh thank you so much! I've never had such ill behaving squirrels before, I usually think they are cute. This is a bad wily bunch.
DeleteThis was so much fun. I LOVE all the photos of you and your family.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday to Olivia!!
We visited the San Diego zoo with our boys long ago, 2010. ;-)
Gosh the squirrel!! They are really naughty.
Keep us posted on the removal of them.
Thank you Carla! Oh you've reminded me to go check the traps.
DeleteIt's nice to see your adventures. I can't believe the heat you've had this late in the year. It sounds awful. And those squirrels. It seems like a lot of people are dealing with insurrectionist animals this year - squirrels, rabbits, deer, and turkeys. Something is up. I think they are planning something...
ReplyDeleteWHAT's GOING ON!
DeleteUnfortunately, the squirrels are part of an ecosystem built on territorial boundaries. Once you remove one, another will take its place.
ReplyDeleteMaybe the new ones will be nicer? They've never been like this before, they've always lived here - I had no problem with a little digging or whatever. But now, they've LOST their minds!
DeleteHappy birthday to Olivia! The squirrel stealing your staghorn fern is both hilarious and infuriating — the 'Taj Mahal of squirrel nests' made me laugh. Hope the traps work! InstaUp APK Old Version
