SIXTY

Age is just a number and all.   But I'm not loving the sound of that.

Better to think about the gift that keeps on giving, Sophia! We share a birthday and celebrated the duo birthdays this past weekend.  Sophia and Ivan are in Oaxaca, and i can't wait to hear about their adventure. We went on a hike, and landed in a sea of Matilija poppies.

And as luck would have it, we ran in to the goats for hire.
Right this minute, I'm having the windows washed - the 2nd story is too high for me to deal with.  Plus the solar panels are getting a scrubbing.  Another task I'd be terrified to do. I spent Monday and Tuesday afternoons moving pots, ladders, etc., away from the house.

I asked Ivan move the big Platycerium superbum off the porch to keep it from being damaged. They are doing a soft pressure wash of the house as well.
He took the opportunity to add more sphagnum moss to the interior.
And he mounted a baby I had been neglecting. First a little donut of moss.
And then secured it with fishing line.  He makes this look so very easy.  I can't quite get the hang of it.
Oh no!  I saw this little alligator lizard hanging on to the vacuum hose for dear life.  When I dipped the net in to help him, I learned he was a fantastic FAST swimmer.
But he couldn't traverse the edge of the pool.  He rested for a bit and was fine.
This area is horribly crowded, I decided the Aloe rupestris was the guy to  be transferred to a different department.
Transfer complete, to the front by the meteor.  This had a stunner of a bloom this year, hopefully it adjusts to it's new spot quickly.

Agave ovatifolia can breath and be seen.  *sorry for the mid day photos, harsh.
In breaking bloom news, Clivia caulescens. I like it so much, I'll grab another if I see one.
Merwillea plumbea - A nice gift from David.
Sprekelia formosissima I think there are a few bulbs there, this is the first to bloom.
Arpophyllum giganteum, so carefree and the blooms last a looooong time.
The dahlia debacle.  During the overhaul of the front garden, I dug up everything as you know.  Most of the dahlia tubers I came across got thrown into an empty raised bed in the backyard.  They responded with the vigor of Jack's beanstalk!  A week ago, I was strutting about bragging internally about the amount of dahlia buds and blooms I had.  OH I WAS POMPOUS!  Well, 24 hours of a strong windstorm knocked every last plant flat to the ground.  So the few I could save got plunked into a vase, the vase of humility.
The rest were chopped down to their knees, or even below that in some cases.  I thought I was on to something, but I should've been clipping them back for stronger stems.

Any other May birthdays?

  2. Sixty! Happy Birthday then! I'm not too thrilled about the aging thing anymore either, but I figure as long as I am going to be forced to do it, I might as well be the most gosh-darned fabulous fifty wunner that there is out there. 52 is coming up quick! Really cool to hear that alligator lizards can swim, and oh how pride goeth before a fall. Don't count those dahlias before they bloom! I guess just another way of saying enjoy the moment.

    1. Oh, you are definitely fabulous! I couldn't believe the way that little lizard swam across the pool - faster than Michael Phelps. I deserved that chop to my pride.

  3. Happy Birthday! This is the year of the big round number birthdays for both of us, I can not believe it. I'm jealous of your window washing crew, we need to get that done. Of course with a 1-level house there's not excuse for not doing it ourselves, when means it keeps getting put off. I love the Ivan with fern photo!

    1. I can't believe it either! The windows were pretty bad, we didn't do it last year. I imagine the solar panels are working more efficiently after seeing all the dirt/dust that came off those as well. Ivan holding the fern is terrific :)

  4. Embrace it. Only the strongest get past their 50s ;) (My father turned 80 on Monday.)

  5. Happy birthday! I love getting older and am embracing it -- NOT!!!

Ivan is such a Platycerium pro. The next time he visits my garden, he can mount mine. I still don't quite know how to go about it.

  6. Happy Birthday to you and enjoy every minute of every day! I will be turning 68 in a few months and am still out in the garden, so consider yourself young! Your Platycerium superbum is amazing…it looks like it belongs in a botanical garden! Happy gardening!

  7. Birthdays for me have never been a big deal, but then these big decade turning points come around and insist on being taken seriously! So obnoxious! You're a runner and fit and your brain is buzzing with ideas and gardens and plants -- you'll be fine. Enjoy your cake! Wonderful treasures in bloom like that arpophyllum. And moving that rupestris solved a problem and added a wonderful element next to the meteor -- love when that happens!

    1. Yeah, 60 used to mean permed short hair and elastic waist pull on pants... It certainly doesn't anymore. :D

  8. Happy Birthday!!
    I enjoyed all the photos.
The dahlia are beautiful in the vase. :-) I have not put my dahlia out as of yet. I was so happy I finally wintered over a dahlia tuber in the root cellar ... my first in many many years of trying.
Our youngest son has a May 18th birthday. :-)

  10. Goats for hire! I love goats and the idea of them servicing hard-to-handle patches of weeds. I was told a neighbor across the street is getting goat 'crew', and all are invited to come over and check them out. I can't wait.
By now, I recognize Ivan by his flip-flops. The ever enthusiastic assistance, with gifts of kindness and knowledge.
Your humility vase is delightful. Happy Birthday!

    1. Thank you Eric. My cat usually ignores them - but his brother (RIP Louie) wouldn't/couldn't stop messing with them. Darn cats!

  12. Il Matilija poppies spesso si trova anche qui nei giardini, l'ho sempre trovata una bella pianta ma a questo punto della stagione sono ancora piccole. Quella zona con le aloe è stupenda! Qui ho cominciato a vedere ora i boccioli dell'Aloe cosmo e dell'Aloe saponaria. Tutto un altro clima rispetto al tuo.

    Un caro saluto!

  13. I hope you (and Sophia) had a great bday! My own bday follows yours by several days but precedes it by several years. I love your reference to a "vase of humility" - it's very pretty in any case!

  14. Happiest of late birthdays to you! Such a wonderful time of the year for a birthday. I love that you made the most of the windstorm. Having lived most of my life in the Midwest and now in Chicago (the Windy City, even though it's just the nickname), I know how frustrating those darn hours of strong wind can be! Such a beautiful vase of flowers! I just put a big vase of orange and pink roses in an open cabinet space in my newly repainted kitchen cabinets. Love spring time flowers!
