Daybreak

"They" say 10-30 minutes of early morning light will tune your circadian rhythm and improve mood.  Are you a morning person or a night owl?  From my morning walk around.  Leucadendron 'High Gold' and Caesalpinia gilliesii making wonderful potfellows.

James is away at a conference in Las Vegas for work, he's doing a big talky-talk on tax. Olivia, Vincent and I are off to meet him for a long weekend.  We're not gamblers, still -it's fun to walk around the ridiculous. Luckily, Sophia and Ivan were available to stay and watch over Dr. & the bunny.

Speaking of, the neighbors rabbit Harry got out and into our yard last night.  It took 30 minutes and a big hunk of apple to catch him.  Thankfully he didn't nibble any of my plants, I think?  Later as I was setting the coffee pot before bed, Olivia ran down the stairs.  She heard a big ruckus in the backyard.  Turned out one of the neighbor cats, The Interloper was getting into a scrap with Dr. Feelgood.  Evidence of cat fight was apparent this morning.  *If I ever have another cat, I'll keep him inside.

The Echinopsis are blooming here & there, I'll likely miss some when I'm gone.  My goodness, they are pure candy.
Cereus repandus, Peruvian apple cactus is loaded with blooms this year.
Berzelia albiflora is such a delight! The truth is I picked up this plant not realizing what it was, the foliage was cool. Turned into a favorite.
Lup dup.  I'd like to find Berzelia abrotanoides to try.
I've been working hard on the back corner slope.  Chipping away at the harder dirt, and throwing out the light fluffy crap on top (pepper tree discard). I found some gems hidden in the slope under debris. The middle of this Deuterocohnia was dead, I trimmed the green living part to plant in this "pot rock".
I'm trying to move things over from other parts of the garden instead of going shopping. This neglected Banksia blechnifolia (top) and Banksia nivia got an upgrade from their previous coach seats.
I'll do a full reveal when I'm done, and top dressed.  Walking back I caught this late blooming Aloe such&such.

The goldens always look their best in evening sun, oh well morning sun ain't too shabby.
Yucca rostrata, from Ruth Bancroft garden.  Very slow growing, about my height now. 5'4" if I stand up straight.
Agave attenuata, Fox Tail. So Foxy!
Oooh, that reminds me.  I snapped a photo of these 2 blooming just a few blocks away.

I thought I did such a great job clearing the front before the new planting makeover.  Well, I did considering the amount of plants up there.  But lilies and all kinds of things keep popping up.
It's ok, I'm kind of letting them bloom and then deciding what to do.  The small red alstroemeria can stay, it's a variety that stays extremely close to the ground and doesn't spread.
Reality Blast,  the mess!  Terrible, but currently there are lemons, limes, tomatoes, longan fruit, herbs & blueberries in there. And seedlings. I'll never be Martha Stewart 😁.
Have a great week, wish me luck on the slot machines!

  3. These are such lovely photos. I have been trying to get out in nature more (or at least look at photos of nature). I go to therapy and it's one of the things that's been recommended for me. It really makes me feel better. Thank you for sharing.

  4. Oooo, the oblique morning light is magical in your photos. I'm becoming more of a morning person the older I get. I can't sleep past daybreak--especially in the summer. The sun wakes me up. :) Gosh, that peachy-pink Echinopsis bloom is stunning!

  6. Up early in the summertime when the sun is shining, but I could sleep all day in the cloudy grey winter. Re: the bunny. There was a big white and black one munching on my mom's plants when I was up there. It was HUGE, and so tame. I tried my best to scare it away but it wanted to be friends. Ugh. Have fun in Vegas!

    1. I laughed at -it wanted to be friends. I love our house bunny, but having one munching in the garden is no good. I'm the same, sleep more in winter.

  7. I am more of a night person and wish that I was not. I always naturally wake around 7:30am. Sometimes it is midnight or after before I go to sleep. On a different note, I just purchased my first aloe! :)

  9. I am a morning person. My husband is a night owl. I love being in the garden with a hot cup of coffee when the sun come ups then heading inside when it gets hot. My husband sleeps late and works outside during the hottest part of the day, noon - 3. I can't bear the heat and rest during that time. We meet and share conversations at meal time. It works for us!

I'm not sure if rabbits eat cactus but they dearly love young tender bean sprouts. Don't ask me how I know this horrible fact. Your garden looks great and good luck on the slot machines!

I'm a 5:30 am kind of morning person and I wish I could sleep in just a little...
Fully impressed and proud of The Doctor, protecting his territory, attaboy!
Berzelia is gorgeous, even if the name doesn't quite roll off the tongue. Great finds un-earthed in the corner. Love what you did with it and excited to see the reveal.
Have a grand time in Vegas.

I bet waking up in the cool morning with all of this beautiful scenery is just breathtaking, relaxing, and such a refreshing way to start your day. Love seeing all the beautiful photos. Great work!

  14. Like Phillip, I am a night person who wishes they were an early morning person. Mornings are cold and I am so groggy. Yuck. Berzelia and Banksia are so attractive. Also, that short red alstroemeria.

I am not a morning person per se, because when I get up I don't like to engage in conversation. Weather permitting I prefer to go outside in the natural light.

I love the pottery pig in one of your pictures. I am pleased it survived the catfight! "
