Peace & ponyshoes

When I glanced at this Leonotis yesterday, it looked like it was saying "Peace".
I just searched 10 minutes for this photo, and I don't think my big ponyshoes story is going to be as good as I thought.  I moved this Aloe in March (probably ferox hybrid) from the slope to next to the pool full sun area.  It was reaching for the light so strongly, I felt bad for it.  After a month of no effort, and NO thank-you's for all the spring sunshine  - I jumped in to help the plant "open up". I put these tiny horseshoes -ponyshoes on some of the leaves.
I imagined this to be a dramatic reveal of my efforts, but it didn't really pan out that way.  I promise you the shoes worked!
I have had to tune out the news, especially recently.  I checked in for a minute yesterday, and thought "wait, when is his term over".  It took me a second, then I realized - it's still the first year.  Ay yi yi.

Our town has a lovely tradition, a little flag is placed in every front yard a bit before the 4th of July.  Livermore population is about 83,000.  Volunteers place the flags, that's a lot of steps!
I'll leave with some July blooms...

Tecoma stans

Gladiolus cardinalis

Passionflower, usually a hub of Gulf fritillary butterflies in all the stages are covering this.  I've only seen a few this year :(
Lovely liatris
A towering lily
and random bouquets I pulled together for in the house to liven it up for a BBQ. Trachelium.
Dahlia, glad, eriogonum grande rubescens-red buckwheat, rose, cousin itt & bottlebrush foliage.
Agapanthus (I guess I do have one!), lily, and friends.
The first Eucomis bloom this year,  tiny pineapple is emerging.
Happy 4th, we will be having a nice little family BBQ.  I hope you are having a nice holiday, and the weather is cooperating!

  1. Hah! Your Eucomos "pineapple"looks about a week ahead of mine. Amazing how plants can flower at almost the same time even hundreds or thousands of miles apart.

I've got an Aloe wickensii all closed up--has been for years--maybe I need to source some horseshoes.

Beautiful flowers and bouquets, too. We have a hot week ahead.

    1. Yes, force the wickensii - lol, maybe not when a heatwave is headed your way. I've been surprised by the mild June. It looks like July is shaping up to be more typical.

  2. I love all your flower arrangements, especially the pink one! My Leonotis are blooming too. I'll have to look for a peace sign - the universe needs to send as many of those as possible!

  3. I have grown the leonotis before (an annual here) and I love it. I wish I had added it this year. I love the horseshoes on the aloe, very clever. Thanks for providing a bright spot on such a sad 4th.

  4. Livermore has a good tradition. For three decades we lived in a city about that size, and I was just reflecting yesterday that it was a pretty good size. It gives you most of the convinces and amenities without overpowering you. By you, I mean me. 😀

    1. I agree, it is easy to get around - not dealing with traffic is a blessing. I feel lucky we landed here.

  5. Our Leonotis is flowering as well. We love this plant and call the 'cheeto plant'. Your floral arrangements look stunning, by the way.

  7. What a grand idea (the pony shoes). Some realtor thought it was a good idea to put little flags in everyone's front yard for blocks, with her business card attached. It was the 4th, and during Trump's first term. Needless to say the marketing backfired as she had many of us Portland liberals calling her to complain.

    1. Oh, terrible idea - this has been longstanding here, so it doesn't "feel" one way or the other. Also, it really irks me that the flag has been taken as a symbol for the right. To me it's never been that, so I let my little flag stand. Along with all my peaceful, funny & liberal stickers plastering my garbage, recycle & green bins that are our there every week.

  10. Running the League of Women Voters booth on Friday, quizzing young Future Voters about our wonderful government was hard! At least the prizes were cute. So I tuned out too ... substituting Tour de France for US news for several weeks, hoping for recovery.
