Catching up

Hi!  I've been gone for a week on a trip to Vegas.  A total blast, but when I leave Vegas I always feel like I'm done and will never go back 😉.  I'm not a gambler at heart,  I went with a lifelong friend who is a hardcore Sammy Hagar (who has a short tour at the MGM Dolby Live right now) fan from the very beginning of his career.  I love music, sun, costumes and dancing SO why not? We maybe had a tiny bit of fun. *The furry leg warmers light up, for a little extra flair.

  Tina and me.

Sammy, 77 - he was great, tons of energy band sounded fabulous.  Bob Weir, also 77 - cofounder of The Grateful Dead came out and did a song with him as well.  We ended up going twice, and got pulled down the VIP booth the 2nd night - I think it was the LEGWARMERS! Hahaha.

We didn't stay at The Flamingo Hotel, but I thought I'd share a picture of the pink flamingoes in the interior garden area.
Home again!  Right before I left, several of my Echinopsis popped off some stunning blooms.  I'm afraid I missed some of them while I was gone.  Thankfully, I didn't miss 'Flying Saucer' these blooms are huge, you can spot them from across the garden.

This NOID Aloe also pushed out a late bloom.
The crevice garden also sent out some prettiness - I'm guessing this is a ground orchid gladiolus?
The Ixia viridiflora turquoise blooms are a sight to behold, with a deep purple center.
The turquoise was the most vivid the first 3 or 4 days of blooming.
Allium bulgaricum, sicilian honey garlic.

Banksia blechnifolia, gorgeous new foliage! This plant just keeps on giving.
Melaleuca diosmifolia, green honey mytle.  I have a hard time photographing the fine foliage.
It's very Australian looking bloom is much easier to capture.
The 2 Lonicera I planted in black pots next to the fence have welcomed spring.

They smell so nice.
Oops, next to the Allium an Amaryllis blooming.
Since I'm not really going in order - This is happening right now!  Countertops finally going in.  The slab for the island broke (oops, not my fault) so the whole shebang won't be finished until next week.  I'm thrilled with the look and so excited to have a working kitchen again.
The Callistemon.  The black fence really shows off the plants, and maybe none more than this one.

Tomatoes!  Can't wait.
The Cleistocactus went crazy with blooms.  I had to leave the sprinklers on as it was so HOT when I was away.  With a few new plants around, I didn't want to take any chances on them dying -so everything got daily drinks.
Looks like a puppet!
The daily watering has also spurred a ton of weed action, I've got lots of pulling to do.

While in Vegas, I did a small gamble.  $10 in a slot machine, 2 pulls and won!  I immediately cashed it out.

I can't wait to catch up on everyone's blogs that I've missed over the last week!

  4. I'm glad you had a great time! Your garden looks marvelous. That Ixia is unbelievable and I have serious envy over your Echinopsis collection. Your kitchen is looking great too but I'm sorry about the minor delay - there's always something when it comes to renovations.

  5. You look rockin! Is ground orchid another name for gladiola?

    1. Thank you - um, no but you are totally spot on. It's def a gladiola. My ground orchids are blooming right now, too. I totally misidentified that. Let's blame travel.

  6. The honey garlic is just opening here in coastal Oregon too. The shrubby stuff is to die for, that banksia! Must have been an amazing amount of work to paint the fence and lattice but so worth it. Sounds like you had the right attitude (and attire!) to see Hagar and Vegas in general. And congrats on your winnings!

  7. You two ladies with your crazy outfits, an eighties blast... no doubt the furry leg warmers did it!
Las Vegas is a crazy town, a little goes a long way for me and returning home is always good.
Banksia's new foliage is so 'fern-like' awesome . Anything against the black fence is elevated in gorgeousness; painting it in this color was an excellent choice.
I remember Lonicera from my childhood: an entire pergola covered in its sweet scented flowers, there's nothing quite like it as memories go.

    1. Haha, thank you Chavli! I don't think I need to go back for 5 years. Your memory of the scent of Lonicera is so nice, it's amazing how a scent can take you right back to childhood.

  8. It looks like you had fun, but Las Vegas can be a bit much! Cactus have the most stunning flowers, and so many people don't give them a chance, thinking they are just ugly spiny things.

    1. It still shocks me that such a big over the top flower comes from a spiny cactus!

  9. Okay I was paging down, loving all the garden photos (and the kitchen, yay!) but really I couldn't stop thinking about the fact Sammy Hagar is 77 years old. WHAT!? That's insane (love the photo of you and Tina).

  10. Leg warmers? Oh my. Sammy Hagar 77 years old? I refused to believe it until I looked it up and, of course, you were right. Aaargh! Aloe and cactus flowers? I always love to see them. Your mystery plant is not a glad, in my humble opinion. I used the plant ID app on my iPhone and it came up flowering rush, which I doubt would be growing in your dry garden. But who knows? It's actually an endangered species in its native Israel.

    1. It's my own fault for not labeling or keeping ID somewhere. I think the ID is Gladiolus carneus, but I could be wrong. If it multiplies in 2026 it will be easier to ID for certain.

  12. Wow, the Cacti are incredible...and the other plants, too. When I scrolled down to the Callistemon, it brought back fond memories of a block of them at a California botanical garden. The hummingbirds were loving them. Sounds like you had a fun time in Las Vegas--cute photo! I wouldn't want to spend huge amounts of time there either, although some of the shows are great, as you say. And the surrounding state and national parks are wonderful in the cooler months. Fun post!

    1. Yes, we met a guy in the elevator that hiked Red Rocks - it was so hot he was still feeling woozy the next day. Definitely better to do in the cooler months. Thank you Beth!

  13. Ha ! I can relate to the feeling of never wanting to go back to Vegas! I had to go at least once a year on business and two days was about all I could take. Your garden just looks fantastic.
