This and that, reno update

This week has flown by!  I've gotten a few plants planted.  I'm going to do the "beginning" photos to documents their progress, or lack thereof.  Chlorophytum 'Fire Flash' kin to spider plants.  The stems should be very orange, so I was thinking it would bring a fun tropical flair to the shade house area. It looks a little sad, maybe wasn't given much light?

Clusia rosea, autograph tree.  I like the foliage - don't know just trying it in a pot. Mostly shade.

Another shade house addition, Schefflera schizophylla.  Doesn't look super happy, hopefully will recover from being shipped.
Come on buddy, of all the new plants - I want this one to make it the most.
Oh yeah, the Rajapuri banana has come to life!  Will I get a hand of bananas this year, year 3 or 4? Probably not, but I'd be excited to see a big crazy banana bloom on it nonetheless.
I really want to do a major overhaul of the front, remove the cherry tree.  But, not immediately (maybe the Fall?).
I'll admit to not hating the way the pathways look right now, but the front is in desperate need of year round interest.  Not just a spring (May really) spectacular, and then meh the rest of the year.

Some odd mentions.  Eulychnia castanea varispiralis had weird growth off the side, I thought it was sprouting new arms or something?
But when I looked closer, I think it's flower/fruit?
I neglected to water the newish Leucadendron 'Hawaii Sunrise"-oops. Watered now, I think will be fine.
I'm glad someone had time to nap on the outdoor bed.
I noticed the Opuntia has begun sprouting new paddles, I'll have to decide which ones to keep & which to snip off. I'd like to train this to grow flat against the fence, we will see how successful that turns out!
Isn't the new growth crazy!  It's practically irridescent.
Aloe striata still making a nice showing.
Tuesday, kitchen gone!  Wednesday capped off electricity.  Thursday a visit from the city inspector for the permit process.  The permit cost us $863.  We aren't moving any electrical or plumbing, or the footprint really. Hmph.  That could have purchased a lot of plants.  I painted quickly Thursday afternoon, before the cabinet install.  So much easier to reach up by the ceiling while nothing was there.
And Friday they began installing cabinets.  You can see I didn't bother painting the areas that will be covered.  I'm thrilled they are actual wood interior vs. our old cabinets.  Felt like chipboard.
And that's a wrap! Thank you to Gerhard for the feature on Succulentsandmore covering our visit with Loree from Danger Garden.  Not only is he an amazing gardener, but he can take some dang good photos! I wouldn't have started blogging without coming across their blogs, and I was beyond thrilled and so happy to have them visit.    Have a great weekend!

  2. I observe from the beginning that you’ll have it made in the shade as the saying goes. And of course everywhere else too.

    1. Right? No change- I don't understand why they had to come inside my home at all. *We had quite a rant about the whole thing, hahaha. Oh wow, that's exciting!!!

  5. Il gatto non sembra risentire dei molteplici impegni e lavori che stai facendo! Il giardino è sempre bello! Qui le opuntie sono ancora completamente ferme.

    Ti auguro una buona settimana!

  6. Wow, those Calla Lilies and Irises are gorgeous! I expect your new plants will be just fine once they get settled in. The kitty is a good role model--don't work too hard, and make sure you take some breaks. Your reno is inspiring; thanks for sharing your updates!

  7. You probably just need to cut the new plants a little slack. Your pathways look great! Your kitchen remodel is already looking good and I bet you won't have to wait 6 months for it to be completed like I did ;)

    1. Knock on wood, but it has gone very smoothly (so far). I expect the countertops to have more delay than anything else -with no work being done - because of making the template, cutting them and then on to the install. Ok, I will cut the plants some slack! ***6 months, I haven't minded the temp kitchen set-up we have, but that would try my patience!

  8. Yep, that permitting process is crazy expensive. Maybe just think of it as a payment to keep local services running. Nice closeup of the opuntia pad - all those little beaks!

    1. You are right, this little city is a nice place to be! I don't remember the pads being so outrageous last year.

  9. Your Leucadendron 'Hawaii Sunrise' is lovely, fingers crossed you watered just in time. What's that gorgeous toothy fella behind it?
Oh, and I'd be joining Dr. Feelgood on the bed. He definitely has the right idea.

    1. Banksia speciosa, I should've backed up a bit to include both! Dr. would welcome your company, he strongly believes napping side by side improves quality of sleep.
