Snowball effect
Weather has made the full change to all sun, all the time. We planned a BBQ to say good-bye to the kitchen. And got to talking about how this King Palm (I believe, from big box store) looks good for 30 days of the year and burnt and awful for the rest. Gotta go. Granted, this is a full SUN spot. Sunrise to sunset, which is serious here. *Ivan still in his slippers jumped right in.
He made quick work of it and got it out. The most difficult part was dodging the pokey spikes around, and not breaking other plants, he did good work!Plopped into a pot, semi shade spot for now. I'm hoping it forms those gorgeous green somewhat bulbous trunk/s. If not, well. After the tedious removal of the palm (because it was surrounded by other plants - I thought I should take the opportunity and remove the biggest of the Agave blue flame while I had the chance. *There are 2 pups there, they grow quickly and will fill in.
We began moving rocks and plants around, mounding up the soil. Removed an Aloe speciosa from another bed that was crowded and put it in the old palm spot. Added a NOID Eucalyptus with gorgeous bark *from David, Slow_Boat.
We ended up with this, I need to make a trip for additional top dressing rock.
Lots of crevices to take advantage of. This should fill in nicely.
It was a fun day, and I feel like it's such an improvement even tho it's not complete. I'll post more photos when I fill it in and add the rock top dressing. Monday I spent the day emptying the kitchen, which took so much longer than I anticipated. I was glad to purge things stuck in the back of cabinets. They should be here any minute to demolish. I hope you have a nice week in store!
I can only dream of having an Ivan to help me in the garden! Work in the garden can indeed have a domino effect but it sounds like you had a good plan. My goal this week is to get my dahlia tubers out of the garage and into pots to germinate while I wait for space to open up in the raised planters of my cutting garden.
ReplyDeleteI'm lucky he's happy to get dirty, I would have had to roll the tree out - it's heavy! I should add some dahlias soon, I'll sure miss them if I don't.
DeleteHave a fun week Tracy.
ReplyDeleteI have cabbage to pot on this week. And more seeds to start. :-)
I did clean my south garden on Sunday. I hope to start cleaning a bed a day or two.
Spring just might be here. Hee Hee!
Sounds like you've done a lot of spring cleaning Carla, I'm glad the spring has found you.
DeleteThere are a lot of pieces to this garden, and moving them must sometimes be difficult.
ReplyDeleteIt was great to have the help, I certainly couldn't pick it up!
DeleteOh, nice for the help. Of course things snowball once you are able to move one thing.
ReplyDeleteHe is a great help, and enthusiastic to boot!
DeleteWorking around thorny plants is a challenge, you are very fortunate to have Ivan helping enthusiastically. Has the Blue flame bloomed out or just got too large?
ReplyDeleteI love the pops of orange flowers through out!
Chavli
I wasn't ready to remove it yet, it was quite beautiful. But with all the room opened up, I took the opportunity to get in there! I love that orange, too - Thank you :)
DeleteWow, Ivan did good! I cannot imagine being able to slice such a nice tidy root ball like that. Fun changes, including the ones indoors. "all sun, all the time"... gaw! I can only imagine. For now it's rain, rain, sun, rain, sun, rain, rain, rain...
ReplyDeleteNot only a great help, but enthusiastic instigator haha! Rain, rain, sun - those glimpses make it all the more tantalizing (and frustrating). Although the payoff is Portland has the most beautiful summers. Just get here already!
DeleteWow, this is so beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. I'm sure it was hard work, but worth it nonetheless. I particularly love the pink near the if you give a mouse a cookie area and the flowers.
ReplyDeleteThank you CCC ;)
DeleteAbsolutely stunning. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda!
DeleteThat's a big rootball he dug out. I looked up King palms and while some websites say full sun others say partial shade but not midday sun. Your palm is defintiely telling you it's unhappy. Fingers crossed it survives. I love your garden.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not happy, I left it too long thinking as it got older it would be able to take it. Thank you!
DeleteBusy, busy. Good idea to move the Palm. Gosh, your garden is amazing!
ReplyDeleteThank you Beth, I'm so glad we just moved it. Why did I wait so long?
DeleteYeah! I'm glad you moved that palm. If it doesn't do its job, take it out. One change leading to another, I know that well. But the editing will be worth it!
ReplyDeleteAgree, next time I won't wait so long if something is bugging me!

ReplyDeleteBravo to you and Ivan. King Palms are gorgeous well grown--good to give it another chance in a more protected area. Excellent improvements to the area that already looked great.
ReplyDelete'Blue Flame' I'm out of love with that one. Too big too fast, and loses its youthful beauty as it ages. mitis 'Nova' similar but without BF's flaws. The flaw with 'Nova' is finding one for sale. There's always a catch...
Great blog
