Short & sweet

I spent the day putting a clear sealant on the lath house slats and all of the decking. First tho, cleaning & prepping.  Keeping debris off the deck during this whole project was laughable with the Arbutus plopping strawberries downward now & again.

Oops, stepped on one.

I used Seal Once Marine Clear Sealant, it was a cloudy white.  I saw this tape trick to easily pour paint out of the can.  It worked kinda - but this was far more liquidy than paint.  I imagine it would work like a charm with actual paint.
Tested on the back outside slats first, to make sure the color wasn't odd.  There was a slight purple tinge to it.  Like milk with a touch of lavender. But it did dry completely clear.  The weather was fantastic, I really lucked out.
And on to the inside.  The slats took the most time, obviously.  Both sides, and I tried to get the top & bottom edges best I could. Took a break for a Boca burger and a big handful of ginger snaps.
Then onto the deck floor.  You can really see the purple tinge here right after it was applied.
I started off using a flat pad stain applicator, it was dripping so much.  I switched to a traditional paint roller and that worked better for me.

Glad that job is done!  We might get some rain later this month, we will see.
While I was in the slope, I noticed a little Protea bud, I had forgotten about this little guy planted a couple years ago.  I'm excited to plant around this area, and give it more attention than it's gotten in the past.

Fun neighborhood news - I don't remember if I posted this last year, but just a few houses down from us is Deacon Dave. He lights his house "Casa del Pomba" with over 900,000 Christmas lights. We can see it from our upstairs windows, thankfully we don't hear the music or the people.   Volunteers begin the work early fall, the display changes every year.
Used to be, we could just walk down the street and go through the display (you get to walk inside the yard).  There are doves and a waterfall.  Now it's so busy there is a line around the corner.  We usually just stand across the street and call it good. It is a jolly scene.  He won the Great Christmas Light Fight on ABC last night.
Any fun plans for the weekend?

  3. You lath house--you and your "team" did a fabulous job! Looking forward to seeing how you populate it with the fun stuff, the plants.

Does the neighborhood find visitors and the music a bit...disruptive?

This may come as a shock, but my fun plan for the weekend is gardening. Hope yours is lots of fun!

    1. I am excited about planting, too. Although I haven't really settled on anything firm, that's part of the fun.
The neighbor's that live by Deacon Dave's have all been there for decades, he puts signs in their yards so people stay on the sidewalks. I'm sure there are some issues, he closes at 9 pm Su-Th and 10pm on Fri/Sat.

      Ha ha ha, perfect weekend!

  4. I spy "The Laugh House" sign in photo 7... I'm waiting on the christening of the structure where that sign hangs in a prominent place of honor!
I hope the rain lets up so I can go to Heronswood's wreath making session.

  5. Great job with the sealant - I can imagine the annoyance of applying that as leaves and the messy "strawberries" fall! Your neighbor's holiday lights may be the best I've ever seen! You're lucky to enjoy its beauty without the noise.

    1. That is true, we are lucky to enjoy it and not have to deal with all the people & noise. From what I've heard the close neighbors enjoy the spirit of it and aren't put out. Yes, you know those "strawberries" can be a mess. I wish the birds ate them.

  6. Nice to see at least someone out there is on a productive streak. We seem to be stuck in a waffle loop, and not the kind where we get to eat waffles. Mainly just waffling about what to do and whether we really want to do it. Did go to three holiday bazaars yesterday and to a live big band concert. Good stuff that.

    1. You need to add eating waffles to your loop. I feel so behind, that's pushing me. It sounds like you're having loads of fun - that's great!

  10. This blog beautifully highlights the versatility of grow bags in gardening! Plant growing bags are perfect for urban gardeners, offering excellent drainage and root health. I love how they simplify planting tomatoes, herbs, and flowers, even in small spaces. Durable, reusable, and eco-friendly—grow bags truly transform gardening into a more efficient and enjoyable experience!
